RE: [bbmareps] Sore fingers tutors on tour

Hi Taube, bbmareps and those with sorefingers,

To confirm, Mollie, Rich & Eric are playing for us in Towersey on Saturday
6th April.

Also as Taube mentioned we have The Carrivick Sisters playing this coming
Saturday 9th March. Advance ticket reservations are surprisingly good!
That's not usually the case so I'm feeling as relaxed and full of
anticipation as if I was just preparing for a fun night of music as a
regular music punter.

All the best, Mark.

Mollie and Rich and Eric Thorin are also coming to Musically Monstrous, the
excellent series run by Mark Wallace, at the Three Horseshoes in Towersey.
Sorry, but I don't have my diary with me, so I can't give you a date, but it
is sometime in April. I am copying to Mark, so I am sure he will supplement
this or simply Google Musically Monstrous. The Carravick Sisters are coming
to MM this Saturday.

I caught the tail end of the Jerry Douglas Stian Carstensen set on BBC Radio
Three's Late Junction last Thursday (it was Oxford's Bluegrass/Old Time Jam
night), and it seemed pretty much a corker. I heard mention of a
downloadable pod-cast plus extras by going to the Late Junction website.
Certainly worth checking out, if only on i-Player.

Best,

Taube

Re: Sorefingers salutes the Coal Porters back from Ontario with no frostbite

Dear Friends,

This very Saturday night March 9 The Coal Porters, returning with heads held high from their triumphant Canadian stint, perform acoustic bluegrass with both verve and dash at The Railway in Winchester.

The details are:
The Railway
3 St. Pauls Hill
Winchester
SO22 5AE
tickets £10
railwaylive.co.uk/events/sxsc-presents-the-coal-porter

It would be great to see you all there. 'Tis been a fine gig for us in the past, no doubt.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, 2:30pm UK time I am on Radcliffe & Maconie BBC 6 Music discussing "Songs/Acts You Liked In Your Youth But Hate Now". Readers of this email will be relieved to know I liked bluegrass as a youngster and I still like bluegrass here in my Viagra years so there will be no badmouthing of Big Mon or Ralph Stanley heard on the airwaves by me. No sir.

I remain,

Sid Griffin, Esq.

Brompton's Auction

The Saturday newspaper featured a large colour advertisement from Brompton's, fine and rare instruments, marking free instrument valuations.

I am afraid all but one of the appraisal days have past (they took place in London, Taunton, Bristol and Brighton) .  The Brighton day is tomorrow at:

The Hotel du Vin, 2 Ship Street, Brighton.

Please ring or e-mail to arrange a valuation.

The focus seems to be on "Instruments" (violins) and "Instruments and Guitars." They are accepting entries for the forthcoming sale in June.

If you have a vintage guitar or violin (or another instrument) to sell  or you want to participate in the auction to buy:

www.bromptons.co.   or      valuations@bromptons.co

Fiddle shortage/Nordicgrass

I find this "shortage" quite mysterious.  Given that many youngsters (even youngsters our age) have "done" some violin in the past, you might think that there would be a few who might come back to playing old time/bluegrass in their dotage.  Of course, their violin experience may have been so awful that they do not want to take up sawing cat gut again.  Still, there are a number of local folk fiddlers, but they are either into Swedish polskas/schottishes or English/Scottish/Irish folk music.  Meanwhile, we live in hope.

And now for something completely different:  The latest Radio Times lists the following:

World on Three

Radio 3

11 p.m. (23.00 hours)

22.2.2013

New tracks from the band Frigg, who play Nordic grass, a blend of Scandinavian and bluegrass music.  Might be worth a listen.

Also keep your ears tuned to various commercials and background music on the radio and TV.  It is amazing how many theme tunes are featuring banjos, mandolins, old time and bluegrass music.  For those of us "with nothing to do", it might be interesting to keep a log.  I'd surely love to know who is doing all that find playing.

Best regards,

Taube
